Ford is working on a new rear-wheel drive model, but it won’t be a traditional sedan as many believed.

According to a recent report from The Truth About Cars, the long-awaited rear-wheel drive Lincoln model will be a crossover that will likely share its platform with the next-generation Explorer. The American automaker is looking to expand its presence in the ever-growing crossover segment but more importantly wants to capture more of the police vehicle market.

The Ford Explorer Police Interceptor sales are up 52 percent year-to-date while the Taurus Interceptor sales are down seven percent, providing evidence that crossovers are gaining in popularity while the Taurus might not be long for the world. The appeal of a crossover with SUV utility and rear-wheel drive dynamics will offer a competitive alternative to the Chevrolet Tahoe while being more fuel efficient.

2016 Ford Explorer Adds New 2.3L EcoBoost Engine, Platinum Trim

2016-Ford-Explorer

Ford is updating its Explorer for the 2016 model with a new premium trim level and a long list of updates that customers have been asking for.

The new design is a subtle update that works to improve the overall aerodynamic efficiency of the SUV by five percent. Along with a new grille and restyled rear spoiler are new headlights with LED light bars and new taillights. Active grille shutters also close at speed to reduce drag.

The new-for-2016 Platinum trim level takes the Explorer up-market with 20-inch wheels, satin chrome accents and a unique satin chrome grille, along with unique runners along the side and integrated exhaust pipes.

2014 LA Auto Show Coverage

Ford is looking to deliver a true premium experience with the Platinum model which comes with every option available including some new features like 180 degree cameras front and rear (with integrated washers), a side sensor to let you know if you’re next to a pillar in a parking garage, an enhanced version of Ford’s active park assist system and a hands-free liftgate that opens just with the motion of your foot.

Platinum models also come standard with the brand’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost Twin-turbo V6 with 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, which was previously only available on the Sport model.

As for the rest of the lineup, the base 290-hp 3.5-liter V6 remains while Ford has swapped out the 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged 4-cylinder for a larger 2.3-liter unit with more power. The new unit makes 270 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, up 30 hp and torque respectively.

MUST SEE: Shelby GT350 First Look

Available even on the base model, Ford is now also offering the EcoBoost 4-cylinder with 4WD – something not previously possible.

Inside there are plenty of updates particularly on the Platimm trim. There’s real wood, brushed aluminum and leather coats every surface, with a unique stitch design. And to show just how special this model is, it gets a silver Ford logo (not a blue one) on the steering wheel.

But the single biggest change, and one that practically everyone has been asking for,  might be what’s located on the center stack. Yes, the much maligned MyFord Touch system no longer has that awful touch sensitive setup, but real buttons.

ford-new-camera-technology

Ford vehicles will soon be able to see around corners even if you can’t.

The company is introducing new vehicle camera technology that aims to help reduce driver stress and potential accidents by helping see around corners even when the driver can’t. The new split-view camera feature will display a 180-degree view of the area in front of or behind a vehicle. By utilizing real-time video feeds from one-megapixel wide-angle lens cameras in the grille and tailgate, the eight-inch infotainment screen can display a tri-panel look at obstacles coming from either side or straight on. The feature is activated with a simple touch of a button and will automatically shut off when the vehicle reaches 6.2 mph.

In the U.S., split-view technology is available in the 2015 Ford Edge and 2016 Explorer models and is standard on the 2016 Ford Explorer Limited and Explorer Platinum, which goes on sale soon. The American automaker also announced that rear-view cameras will become standard on all of its North American light passenger vehicles by 2018.

The Future of Automotive Lighting is Bright

Osram LED Main Art

“Lighting is the new jewelry,” said David Hulick, global OEM SSL marketing director at Osram Sylvania. It’s something that reinforces a brand’s design DNA and “is part of a car’s identity.”

Indeed, almost every automaker has some sort of signature lighting element, whether it’s BMW’s angel eyes, Lexus’ use of LED daytime-running lamps or the Dodge brand’s bold “racetrack” tail-light assemblies. However, aside from vehicular styling, there’s so much more going on in this field than most drivers would ever expect.

LED Lights

Highlighting the latest advancements in automotive illumination, global supplier Osram showcased some of its newest products, shedding light on this often overlooked space.

LEDing the Way

From acetylene-burning lanterns to old-school sealed-beams bulbs, from halogen lamps to high-intensity discharge assemblies, automotive lighting technology has come a long way over the last hundred years. And it continues to advance in the 21st century, particularly as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) become more affordable.

Ford Model T

Sam Cribari, product marketing manager for automotive exterior LED at Osram said one of its main goals is “bringing cost-effective LED lighting to the mass market.” He added that they’ve been focused on making these systems more affordable at the light-emitter level, which is the most basic component.

LEDs have numerous benefits compared to more traditional lighting solutions, such as halogen. Some of these upsides include massive power savings, greater design freedom and better overall efficiency. However, cost is still an issue, as LED lighting systems require additional components.

SEE ALSO: Five Tips to Help You Not Suck at Off-Roading

Cribari said they need careful thermal management, special electronic controls and more, items that up the price tag. Still, these are challenges they’re working to address.

Osram LED

Michael Godwin, director of visible LED products at Osram said that despite the advancements made with LED technology in recent years, “I would be really hard pressed to say halogen is going away.” This is because it’s an incredibly cost-effective solution.

Still, Godwin said we’ve reached “an inflection point where LEDs are starting to take off,” both outside and inside vehicles. LED cabin lighting has become immensely popular in recent years, with manufacturers bringing the technology to even entry-level products.

The Differences are Clear

To plainly show the differences between its various lighting technologies Osram had several demonstrator vehicles on hand. A 2016 Ford Explorer was equipped with LED low-beam lights and halogen highs. A new Ford F-150 featured an all-LED array while a European-spec Audi A7 exhibited the company’s most advanced lighting technology.

2016 Ford Explorer

The updated Explorer is the first vehicle in its segment to benefit from LED forward lighting technology. In practice, this SUV illuminates the way with pure, clean light that’s homogenous, meaning it’s free from any streaking or discolored patches that could cause driver distraction.

As for its high-beams, the 2016 Explorer relies on halogen bulbs. They provide a lot of light but look less natural than the LEDs, with a yellow tinge to them.

Stepping up, the technology available in Ford’s new F-150 provides full LED lighting. Each of the truck’s lamps contains two arrays containing four individual LEDs. One of these assemblies handles low beams and the other high.

Ford F-150 LED Lights

This arrangement imbues the pickup with clear, powerful, well-controlled light. Additionally, the color temperature is also quite high, meaning it has a very pure, whitish appearance, much like daylight.

Finally, the European-spec Audi A7 Osram had on hand was equipped with the company’s adaptive matrix LED headlamps, the pinnacle of automotive lighting technology today. This is arguably the most impressive automotive lighting system on the market today.

Audi A7 Headlight

Rather than having traditional low- and high-beams, this Audi is equipped with an array of 25 separate LEDs per headlamp. With so many light sources, engineers were able to make them do some pretty remarkable things.

With a forward-facing camera, the car can scan the road ahead, keeping an eye out for oncoming traffic, vehicles driving ahead of you and even road signs. Remarkably, as this system detects targets like these it can power down individual LEDs, dimming just that portion of light field. It’s remarkable to see in action.

Audi Headlights

If another car approaches one of these Audi A7s, the headlamps can dip their lights to avoid blinding the other driver. If you get too close to the vehicle you’re following, it adjusts the light pattern to keep you from getting dazzled by reflected light from your own headlamps.

But even more impressive than all of this is this system’s ability to detect street signs. The LEDs are granular enough to dim the light being shone on a speed-limit marker so the reflective paint doesn’t blind you. Just the small portion of the light field corresponding to the sign gets dimmed while the rest remains at full power. This is perhaps the most impressive aspect of these adaptive matrix LED headlights.

Audi Headlights2

Regrettably, this system is forbidden fruit in America right now; it’s not approved for use by NHTSA. However, this may change in the coming years.

Curiously, European vehicles are allowed to have high beams that are a whopping three times more powerful than what we can in North America. The Audi A7’s lamps glow with the light of a second sun, delivering 225,000 retina-searing candelas.

Not surprisingly, the future of automotive lighting is bright and Osram’s demonstration of its latest wares was an illuminating experience.

top-5-best-car-insurance-deals

The vehicle you own plays a major part in deciding how much you pay for car insurance and you might be surprised to see which vehicles have the best car insurance deals.

A recent study conducted by Quadrant Information Services for insuranceQuotes.com took a look at 20 of the most popular vehicles and divided the average annual cost to insure each vehicle by its price. The insurance-to-cost ratio was used to determine which vehicles are relative bargains to insure and which ones have a high insurance burden.

SEE ALSO: You Can Save 25 Percent on Your Insurance by Bundling

The study’s findings might surprise you, especially considering the top 5 best car insurance deals aren’t your run-of-the-mill sedans. Helping attribute to the findings is the assumption that those purchasing a crossover, SUV or pickup truck is different from the typical driver of an $18,000 sedan. Insurance companies are more than likely to assume a crossover, SUV or pickup is being driven by an older, more experienced driver.

5. Dodge Ram 1500

dodge-ram-1500

With an MSRP of $26,855, the Dodge Ram 1500 lands in fifth place with an average annual insurance cost of $1,302. The American automaker’s pickup has an insurance-cost-ratio of 4.85 percent.

4. Chevrolet Equinox

chevrolet-equinox

Next on the list is the Chevrolet Equinox, with a price of $26,105 and an average annual insurance cost of $1,265. Its insurance-cost-ratio is pretty much the same as the Dodge Ram 1500 at 4.85 percent.

3. Chevrolet Silverado

chevrolet-silverado

Another pickup to land on the list is the Chevrolet Silverado, with pricing starting from $27,815. According to the study, the average annual insurance cost is $1,269 giving the Silverado an insurance-cost-ratio of 4.56 percent.

2. GMC Sierra

gmc-sierra

Are you seeing a trend yet? The GMC Sierra shouldn’t be a huge surprise considering it’s quite similar to the Chevrolet Silverado. Its MSRP is $28,315 while the average annual insurance cost is slightly less than the Silverado at $1,272. As a result, the GMC Sierra has an insurance-cost-ratio of 4.49 percent.

1. Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer tops the list of best car insurance deals, despite its price tag of $34,345. The average annual cost to insure the Ford Explorer is $1,301 giving it an insurance-cost-ratio of 3.79 percent.

The Ford Explorer Platinum will be showcased in the highly anticipated return of X-Files.

The first episode of the six-episode mini series aired Sunday night on Fox. The Ford Explorer Platinum will be driven by FBI Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) throughout the series and continues a longtime relationship between Ford and one of television’s most influential dramas.

Along with the Ford Explorer, numerous other models from the American automaker’s lineup will be used in the show including the Escape, Mustang and Taurus. Ford vehicles were featured when the show first debuted in 1993, with Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) referring to his Ford Taurus as “a good American car.”

SEE ALSO: 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum Review

The Ford Explorer is the best-selling SUV in the U.S. for 25 years and an all-new model was introduced for 2011. Since then, the Explorer has achieved four straight years of sales increases in the U.S. The Platinum model trim debuted last fall and adds a leather-wrapped interior, industry-exclusive 500-watt Sony Audio System and smart technology such as enhanced park assist, a lane-keeping system and rain-sensing wipers.

“Pairing the vehicle that set the bar for SUVs with the show that set the standard for sci-fi television is a great relationship,” said Ginger Kasanic, Ford marketing manager, SUVs and technology. “To be a part of an iconic television show that is so technology-centric is a perfect fit for Explorer – a vehicle loaded with driver-assist technology.”

Ford Announces Three Safety Recalls in North America

0
0

2016-ford-explorer

Ford has announced three separate recalls affecting various vehicles in its lineup.

The first recall affects approximately 38,000 2015-2016 Ford Transit vehicles in North America. According to the American automaker, the Ford Transit is being recalled to inspect and adjust side-curtain airbags as needed. In some vehicles, it is possible the side-curtain airbags are positioned incorrectly on either or both sides of the vehicle. As a result, it may affect the performance of the side-curtain airbags in the case of an accident, increasing the risk of injury in a crash. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

Affected vehicles include certain 2015-2016 low-roof Ford Transit vehicles built at the company’s Kansas City Assembly Plant between March 12, 2014, through March 18, 2016. In the U.S. there are 37,066 affected units, while 839 are in Canada.

SEE ALSO: 2016 Ford Edge vs 2016 Nissan Murano

The second recall affects approximately 5,500 2015-2016 Lincoln MKC and 2016 Ford Explorer vehicles so the American automaker can remove the heaters and replace them with an updated design. Ford says the engine block design coupled with the particular block heater installed in the affected vehicles causes the unit to be susceptible to overheating when the vehicle is parked and the block heater is plugged in. The issue can increase the risk of an underhood fire.

Affected Lincoln MKC vehicles were built between November 25, 2013, through January 25, 2016, at Louisville Assembly Plant, while the 2016 Ford Explorer were assembled at the Chicago Assembly Plant from October 20, 2014, through January 28, 2016. In total, 3,129 Lincoln MKC units are affected by the recall and 2,407 Ford Explorer vehicles. No accidents or injuries related to the issue have been reported.

The third and final recall affects 4,764 Ford F-650 and F-750 vehicles with 4,654 in the U.S. and 110 in Canada. For this recall, Ford will replace the parking brake cable connector clips. In some vehicles, the clips were not manufactured to the correct specification and could break, resulting in unintended movement of the vehicle, increasing the risk of an injury. No accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition have been reported.

Top 10 Most Popular American Cars in the US

top-10-most-popular-american-cars-in-the-us

The top-three best-selling vehicles in the U.S. last year come from American automakers.

But how do other American cars fare? Using 2015 sales data from GoodCarBadCar, we have compiled a list of the best-selling American cars in the U.S.

10. Jeep Cherokee – 220,260

jeep-cherokee

Despite its divisive styling, the Jeep Cherokee came in 19th place overall last year with 220,260 units sold. It appears that its controversial design isn’t keeping shoppers away, with the Cherokee’s sales increasing 23.4 percent over last year’s 178,508 figure.

9. GMC Sierra – 224,139

gmc-sierra

The GMC Sierra is the first pickup truck to break the top 10 list with 224,139 units sold last year, making a 5.8 percent increase over 2015’s sales of 211,833 units. The GMC Sierra came in 18th place overall.

8. Chevrolet Cruze – 226,602

chevrolet-cruze

The Chevrolet Cruze recently underwent significant changes and the all-new model is poised for success in a crowded segment. Finishing 17th place overall, Chevrolet sold a total of 226,602 Cruze vehicles last year but that was a 17 percent decrease compared to 273,060 in 2015. But the roll out on the all-new model is now in full force, so expect those numbers to increase this year.

7. Ford Explorer – 249,251

ford-explorer

The Ford Explorer was once widely considered the most popular SUV in the marketplace, but competition has become fierce in the segment. Last year, the Explorer finished 15th overall having sold 249,251 units. It’s worth noting, however, that those sales include the Ford Explorer Police Interceptor, which had 24,942 units sold to agencies around the nation. Still, overall the Explorer saw an 18.7 percent increase in sales compared to the year before when Ford sold 209,994 units.

6. Chevrolet Equinox – 277,589

chevrolet-equinox

The Chevrolet Equinox is a competitive full size SUV offering and its sales prove it’s quite popular with shoppers. Last year, the Equinox finished 14th place overall and sold 277,859 units. That’s a 14.6 percent increase compared to 2015’s 242,242 figure.

5. Ford Fusion – 300,170

ford-fusion

The Ford Fusion arguably faces the stiffest competition, having to persuade Toyota Camry buyers. It managed a 12th place finish last year with 300,170 units sold. In 2015, Ford managed to move 306,860 units so it actually saw a 2.2-percent decrease.

4. Ford Escape – 306,492

ford-escape

As popular as the Ford Explorer is, the Ford Escape could be cannibalizing some of its sales. The smaller and more stylish SUV is also more affordable, further attributing to its sales success. In 2015, Ford sold a total of 306,492 Escapes, which is good enough for an 11th place overall finish. It saw a minor growth of 0.1 percent compared to 2015’s sales of 306,212.

ALSO SEE: 2017 Ford Escape Review

3. Ram Pickup – 451,116

ram-1500-pickup

And then here comes the pickup trucks. Ram lags behind its competitors, but its sales figures are nothing to laugh at. A total of 451,116 Ram pickup trucks were sold last year, a modest 2.6 percent increase compared to the year prior when Ram moved 439,789 units off the lot. The Ram pickup finished third place overall.

2. Chevrolet Silverado – 600,544

chevrolet-silverado

While the Chevrolet Silverado is catching up to the Ford F-Series, it still has a lot of ground to make up if it wants to one day be the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. For now, Chevrolet is enjoying a 13.4 percent increase in sales after moving 600,544 units compared to 2015’s number of 529,755.

1. Ford F-Series 780,354

ford-f-150

For many years, the Ford F-Series has been America’s best-selling vehicle. The move to lightweight aluminum didn’t scare off shoppers either with a 3.5 percent increase year-over-year to 780,354 units. It’s hard to believe that an American vehicle will dethrone the Ford F-Series anytime soon, or any vehicle from around the world for that matter.

Feds Open Investigation Into Ford Explorer Exhuast Leaks

0
0

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe into model year 2011-2015 Explorers over a possible exhaust leak.

A total of 154 complaints have been logged by NHTSA, each claiming that the odor of exhaust is strong inside the vehicle. Many owners also expressed concerns over exposure to carbon monoxide, which can be deadly.

Ford says that it is fully cooperating with the investigation, which could result in a recall if there is enough evidence to show a widespread problem. One crash has been linked to this issue, though no injuries were caused according to NHTSA. The total number of Explorers being looked at has not been divulged by the organization.

SEE ALSO: 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum Review

According to owners, the problem is particularly bad when the vehicle is at full throttle, when climbing steep hills and when the air conditioning is set to recirculate.

Ford has issued two different technical service bulletins about the issue, but owners have reported that a fix at the dealership did not make the exhaust smell go away.

2019 Ford Explorer Finally Spied in Close-to-Production Form

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

Ford has finally moved onto testing a 2019 Explorer prototype that looks closer to a production model.

Spy photographers previously caught a 2019 Ford Explorer mule testing, but this is the first time they’ve managed to catch it in prototype form. Seen testing in Dearborn, Michigan, the 2019 Ford Explorer prototype previews an evolutionary design for the popular SUV. Up front, we can see a new grille, headlights, fog lights and hood, although they’re all heavily camouflaged. You can, however, get a hint of a similar design that Ford has been incorporating on all its new crossover and SUV models.

For the rear, there’s an updated tailgate and new tail lights accompanying the new rear bumper. The big news is that the 2019 Ford Explorer will ride on the automaker’s D6 platform that will also underpin various Lincoln models.

SEE ALSO: Ford Explorer vs Honda Pilot

Reports say the D6 platform is flexible enough to accommodate both front- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles, with available all-wheel drive. That means there’s a possibility the new Ford Explorer could go rear-wheel drive.

Under the hood, expect to see the latest EcoBoost engines and like the recently announced new Ford Mustang, the Explorer will likely lose its naturally aspirated V6 engine. Look for the new SUV to debut next fall or early 2018 before it goes on sale in summer 2018.

5 Things We Know About the 2019 Ford Explorer So Far

[See image gallery at www.autoguide.com]

Ford is working hard on the next-generation of its popular Explorer SUV.

When it comes to midsized SUVs, none sells better than the Ford Explorer in the U.S. — and for good reason. The popular seven-seater has been a staple in the American automaker’s lineup since the early 1990s and now the sixth-generation model is in development.

SEE ALSO: 2019 Ford Explorer Finally Spied in Close-to-Production Form

Although it will go on sale as a 2019 model year, there’s a bit we already know about the next-generation SUV as spy photographers have already caught a prototype testing.

5. It Rides on a New Platform

The 2019 Ford Explorer is expected to ride on a new platform called “D6.” Currently it’s underpinned by the D4 platform also found on the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT, but look for the D6 to make an appearance in several of Ford’s models in the future. It’s believed that the new platform will take advantage of lightweight materials like aluminum, similar to what Ford did with its popular F-150 pickup. In addition, rumors suggest it can be configured for front-, rear- and all-wheel drive but don’t expect the Explorer to go rear-wheel drive. For now, it is believed it will continue to be offered with front-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive available as an option.

4. It Will Likely Lose its Naturally-Aspirated V6 Engine

Like the refreshed Ford Mustang, the automaker is expected to drop the naturally-aspirated V6 engine from the Ford Explorer’s lineup. Look to see the 2.3-liter four cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engines live on, with slight updates to enhance performance and fuel economy. The deletion of the naturally-aspirated V6 will help boost the average fuel economy and emissions across the entire Explorer range.

3. Look for it to Debut in Late 2017 or Early 2018

There’s a possibility Ford will debut the 2019 Explorer at the 2017 L.A. Auto Show, but it’s more likely it will bow at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Either way, it should go on sale in summer 2018 as a 2019 model year.

2. Its Styling Will be More Evolutionary than Revolutionary

Although it’s still hard to see with the heavily camouflage concealing the prototype, the next-generation Explorer won’t see any drastic styling changes. The focus will be on using aluminum to shed weight, helping make it more fuel efficient as well as taking advantage of the new platform. Some would say the fifth-generation model did enough to change the popular SUV’s styling that debuted as a 2011 model year. Needless to say that’s several years ago and by the time the new model bows, it will be a welcomed change even if it’s not overwhelming.

1. It Will Continue to Sell Well

Last year, the Ford Explorer sold 248,507 units, making it the 14th overall best seller in the U.S. It’s a safe assumption that regardless of how Ford decides to style the Explorer, it will continue to sell well among the midsize SUV segment, especially for shoppers looking for seven seats. Currently the model starts from $32,605 including destination ($35,039 in Canada),  but don’t expect it to see any sort of major price hike when the new model is introduced.

It may be difficult to tell, but Ford gave the 2018 Explorer SUV a mild refresh.

Being introduced at the 2017 New York Auto Show, the updated Explorer features revamped front and rear styling details, better technology and more options. The American automaker’s most well-known SUV now has an available 4G modem that includes a Wi-Fi hotspot that can support as many as 10 devices at once, up to 50 feet away from the vehicle. There’s also SYNC Connect, allowing owners to connect with their Explorer remotely using FordPass to start, lock, unlock and locate their vehicle from almost anywhere.

Shoppers can also choose from a newly available Safe and Smart Package that combines high-demand driver-assist features including adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, blind spot information system, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping system, auto high-beams and rain-sensing wipers.

The 2018 model year also adds four new color options to the Explorer’s lineup: Burgundy Velvet Tinted Clearcoat, Cinnamon Glaze, Platinum Dune Tricoat and Blue Metallic. The Explorer gets five new wheel choices as well.

Engine choices for the 2018 Ford Explorer include a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque or a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 with 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Look for the model to arrive dealerships this fall, with pricing announced closer to its release.

top 10 new cars people keep the longest

Toyota owners love their cars.

According to a new study conducted by iSeeCars, the average vehicle is kept by its owner for 7.3 years, but four Toyota models are kept well beyond the average length of ownership. The automotive research firm analyzed over 15.7 million used vehicles sold by original owners to determine when new car owners sell their cars. For the top 10 models, the average ownership ranges from 8.8 years to 10.6 years, or 21 to 45 percent longer than the overall average of 7.3 years.

Here are the Top 10 new cars that owners keep the longest:

10. Audi TT

2017 audi tt coupe

The average Audi TT is kept by its owner for 8.8 years and it’s one of four sports cars on the list. Likely attributing to the length of ownership for the Audi TT is the time between introduction of new models. Both the first- and second-generation Audi TT sports cars stayed on the market for eight years a piece.

9. Toyota 4Runner

2014 toyota 4runner

The first of four Toyota vehicles on the list is the 4Runner SUV, which owners kept an average of 8.8 years. The reliable SUV has become a familiar sight in Toyota’s lineup and it’s no surprise owners hold onto them longer than average.

8. Toyota Avalon

2016 toyota avalon

The Toyota Avalon is the only sedan on the list at 8.8 years. The Toyota Camry doesn’t break into the top 10 at an average ownership of 8 years, although the Accord is closer at 8.4 years.

7. Chevrolet Corvette

2018 chevrolet corvette carbon65 edition

Like the first three cars on the list, the average Chevrolet Corvette is kept by its owner for 8.8 years. It’s the only American sports car that’s ranked in the top 10 and we’re sure Corvette owners have a huge list of reasons why they don’t find a need to replace their cars.

6. Toyota Sequoia

2010 toyota sequoia

One possible reason why Toyota Sequoia owners hold onto their SUVs for an average of 8.9 years is because Toyota hasn’t given them a reason to upgrade. The Sequoia is one of the oldest models in the Japanese automaker’s lineup, having received minor updates since the current generation was introduced in 2008.

5. Ford Explorer

2017 ford explorer

Another SUV getting plenty of use out of its owners is the Ford Explorer, with an average of 8.9 years of ownership. If you’re looking at just America’s most popular cars, the Ford Explorer has the longest length of ownership for popular cars, beating out the Honda Accord (8.4 years) and the Toyota Camry (8 years).

4. Mercedes-Benz SLK

2014 mercedes-benz slk

The model no longer exists in Mercedes-Benz‘s lineup, but it appears SLK owners love their luxury convertibles. The average owner holds onto it for 9 years, also making it second-ranked among new passenger cars owners keep the longest.

3. Ford Expedition

2018 ford expedition

Similar to the Ford Explorer, the Ford Expedition lands on the list, joining other SUVs. One strong possibility is that families hold onto their SUVs until their kids get older, knowing that their new cars won’t get messed up by children.

2. Porsche Boxster

2017 porsche 718 boxster s

It might be Porsche‘s entry-level model, but owners hold onto their Boxsters for an average of 9.9 years, making it the longest-owned sports car on the list. And considering how subtle Porsche’s design changes are across generations, it’s little surprise owners don’t feel a need to upgrade every few years.

1. Toyota Land Cruiser

2016 toyota land cruiser

The vehicle owners keep the longest on average is the Toyota Land Cruiser, at 10.6 years of ownership. The Land Cruiser also has one of the richest histories in Toyota’s lineup, having existed in one form or another since the 1950s. The current model has been in production since late 2007 as a 2008 model year, and like the Sequoia, Toyota is giving owners little reason to upgrade.

Ford Recalls Nearly 3K SUVs, Trucks in North America

2017 ford f-150

Two separate Ford recalls have been announced affecting various models.

The first recall affects 2,418 vehicles in North America, with 2,195 in the U.S., nine in federalized territories, 39 in Mexico and 175 in Canada. Affected vehicles include the 2017 Ford F-150, Ford Explorer and Ford Super Duty, all of which could have an inadequate weld between the driver seat and the manually operated seat back recliner mechanism. Ford says in the affected vehicles, a driver seat back frame that has been improperly welded may fail to comply with certain federal motor vehicle safety standards, and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of an injury.

The American automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated to the recall, and dealers will inspect and replace the driver seat back frame as necessary at no cost.

The second recall is for certain 2015-2017 Ford F-150 and Ford F-250 to F-550 Super Duty vehicles equipped with aftermarket chrome exterior door handle covers that were purchased as an accessory from a Ford dealer. In those affected vehicles, the exterior door handle fitted with an aftermarket chrome cover may not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards, and may experience inertial loads that could cause it to unlatch during a side impact, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Ford has identified 551 kits sold through dealerships, including 247 in the U.S. and 304 in Canada. The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries associated to the issue and the dealers will remove the covers from affected units and reimburse customers for the cost of the covers and labor.

NHTSA Expands Ford Explorer Probe After Reports of Carbon Monoxide Exposure in Cabin

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is inching its way toward what could be a massive recall of Ford Explorers.

An initial probe kicked off in 2016 after owners entered numerous complaints of an unpleasant exhaust smell in the cabin into the NHTSA database.

Formal grievances swelled into the hundreds by the end of the year and continued growing into 2017. The issue was so serious, one California police officer faulted it for overpowering him while behind the wheel of his Explorer-based Interceptor Utility, resulting in a crash last February. He wasn’t alone. On Thursday, the NHTSA announced at least three other wrecks could be attributed to carbon monoxide exposure inside the vehicle. All in all, the agency stated it is aware of 41 injuries and over 2,700 complaints linked to the issue.

While the injuries are mostly instances of nausea, severe headache, and dizziness, those symptoms pose a serious risk while driving. Concerned the problem could result in another crash, the NHTSA has broadened the probe to encompasses 1.33-million vehicles from 2011 to 2017 and upgraded it to a complete engineering analysis.

According to Reuters, the agency says it has “no substantive data or actual evidence,” such as a blood test “supporting a claim that any of the alleged injury or crash allegations were the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.” But early testing hints that CO levels may be present in the cabin, rising to elevated levels in certain driving scenarios.

Proof aside, the sheer number of complaints is enough to warrant further investigation. Additionally, the Austin Police Department pulled 40 Interceptor SUVs from service this month after eight officers became ill, reportedly due to carbon monoxide exposure.

The NHTSA says it is “actively working with law enforcement agencies that use these vehicles to determine if this issue is related to a potential safety defect.” It noted that police variants of the Explorer suffer from manifold cracking, “which appear to present a low level of detectability, and may explain the exhaust odor.”

Ford has issued multiple service bulletins related to the exhaust issue, hoping to address complaints from police fleets and other owners. The automaker says it will cooperate with the agency. In its most recent statement, Ford claims a dedicated company team is working with police and the NHTSA on the problem.

Ford Identifies Source of Dangerous Carbon Monoxide Leak in Police Vehicles

Ford is working with police departments to resolve the issue with its Police Interceptor SUVs.

Ford has assembled five squads of investigators to help police departments cope with the growing number of reports of exhaust fumes incapacitating on-duty officers in Explorer-based Interceptor Utility vehicles. While the problem appears to exist in civilian spec SUVs as well, police vehicles are getting the most attention from Ford and the press, especially after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration cited three wrecked patrol vehicles and numerous drivers looking green in the gills.

The NHTSA ramped up its engineering analysis since then, which could lead to a recall on all Explorer-based models from 2011 to 2017. But Ford hopes to get out ahead of the issue by making good on an earlier promise, dispatching its own investigative teams to ensure police departments don’t look to other automakers the next time they need to replenish their fleets.

According to Ford, it’s already making headway in solving the problem.

Bill Gubing, chief engineer for the Explorer, told the Detroit Free Press Tuesday that Ford investigators are discovering police vehicles with holes and exposed areas near the taillights or rear hatch that could allow carbon monoxide to seep into the cabin of some Interceptor Utility vehicles.

The manufacturer blames improperly installed aftermarket modifications — common on patrol cars — for the improperly sealed cabins. This would explain why the issue affects police vehicles more often than their civilian counterparts, distancing the company from the problem.

Ford has already shored up vehicles at the Auburn Police Department in Massachusetts. Last week the department was forced to remove several SUV from service after carbon monoxide exposure hospitalized three officers. It has since moved onto Austin, Texas, where the local police stopped using SUVs entirely after eight officers became ill.

A department in Portsmouth, New Hampshire expressed similar concerns this week and is considering suspending usage of its own Interceptor Utility fleet until Ford gets around to helping them.

“We are all concerned from the front-line officers all the way up to the chief,” explained Eric Benson, Portsmouth’s training officer. “We want to get this solved. We certainly don’t want to wait until something happens. We want to take all measures we can to ensure that not only all the officers are safe but the public as well.”

Ford stated it would pay for the cost of specific repairs to any police vehicle in any city that experienced similar issues.

“By no means is our investigation complete,” Gubing said in a statement. “We’re doing everything we can to figure out what issues are out there and how we can help.”

The Blue Oval currently carries the largest share of the police vehicle market — but less than it did when the venerable Crown Victoria was still in production. Still, when you have a feather in your cap, you’re going to want to leave it there. Ford’s scramble to right the wrong, as well as its continued broadening of its law enforcement lineup, shows it aims to keep the police on its good side.

Gubing said he doesn’t see any reason for worry among Explorer drivers not wearing a badge. “From a carbon monoxide perspective, the police duty cycle is very different than what a retail customer drives,” he said.

“It creates more combustion gas at the back of the vehicle because the engine’s working harder and faster,” Gubing continued. “At the same time, there are modifications done to the back of the vehicle that certainly provide leak paths when those modifications are not done properly.”

With no holes drilled to affix additional lighting or communication equipment on civilian SUVs, Ford assumes the general public is fine. However, that won’t stop the NHTSA from investigating more than 2,700 complaints of unpleasant exhaust odors in Explorer cabins.

Shattering Sunroofs Might be More Common than you Think

scion tc sunroof

At least 859 complaints about exploding sunroofs have been filed in the past 22 years.

Consumer Reports recently conducted a study into exploding sunroofs, finding that the safety standards and regulatory oversight of sunroofs have not kept pace with dramatic size and design changes over recent years. The publication used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Office of Defects Investigation’s vehicle owner complaint database from 1995 to September 2017 to determine the vehicles with the most complaints.

The list included at least 208 models of cars from 35 different automakers with the Scion tC being the most popular with 71 complaints. Hyundai topped automakers with 119 complaints, with Ford coming in second at 85 and Nissan in third with 82. Other vehicles that had frequent complaints include the Hyundai Veloster (54), Kia Sorento (43), Nissan Murano (28), and Kia Optima (25).

One of the biggest issues with shattering sunroofs is that consumers are left on their own to deal with it if it occurs. Consumer Reports found little consistency in how dealerships or automakers acknowledge or resolve the issue, or even worse, who should pay for it.

Exploding sunroof complaints increased steadily from 1995 until 2013, when they spiked through 2015. Many of those complaints came from Kia and Hyundai owners, although complaints have declined since then.

If you’re interested in protecting yourself, Consumer Reports has published some tips including asking the dealer if a sunroof is made with laminated glass before you purchase a vehicle. In addition, you should ask about the vehicle’s warranty and specifically if it covers shattering sunroofs, and listen for warning signs such as popping sounds coming from the sunroof area.
